The two Herriman high schools entered Friday's Region 2 football game as the region's only unbeaten teams, both 3-0 in league play. Mountain Ridge ended that in a quarter, scoring 28 points in the second period on the way to a 45-7 win over Herriman 12. It was the Sentinels' fifth straight win over the Mustangs, and the Deseret News reports it is the best record Mountain Ridge has had at this point in a season 1.
Mountain Ridge head coach Nick Robins told the Deseret News the first quarter was tight before his team adjusted. "They had some stuff that we weren't ready for on film," Robins said. "We just kind of adjusted to what they were doing." 1 He said the in-city rivalry gave the game more weight than a routine region date. "It's always good to beat an in-city rival," Robins said. "You can pretend all you want about this game just being another game, but it's not." 1
The Sentinels moved to 8-0 and Herriman to 6-2, according to the Deseret News's Week 8 roundup 2. No Region 2 team has finished a game within 36 points of Mountain Ridge this season 1.
Elsewhere in the region Friday, Westlake beat Riverton 14-7, leaving the Silverwolves at 2-6, and Copper Hills beat Bingham 14-13 in overtime, dropping the Miners to 3-5 2. The Copper Hills win guaranteed the Grizzlies their first winning season in school history, the roundup states 2. Region 2 comprises Bingham, Cedar Valley, Copper Hills, Herriman, Mountain Ridge, Riverton and Westlake 3.
Mountain Ridge travels to South Jordan to play Bingham next week, and Herriman hosts Copper Hills. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday 1.
The Ledger withholds the names of the players in this game. The Deseret News, which covered it, named several, all of them high school students 12.
